This week in the industry… Survey: 72% of Freelancers Want to ‘Shed’ Regular Jobs (via Staffing Industry Analysts) During a global survey of freelancers, it was found that 72 percent who also have “regular” jobs want to quit and work entirely for themselves. Additionally, 61 percent say they will, or probably will, quit their regular jobs within two years. This study was conducted by online staffing firm, oDesk, and a Gen Y consulting firm, Millennial Branding. Employees vs. Independent Contractors: Do you know the difference? (via Workforce) Many find themselves unsure of the difference between employees and independent contractors. Employers owe contractors far fewer obligations than employees. Employers take a risk when they classify someone performing services for them as an independent contractor instead of an employee. This article provides thoughtful insight on knowing how to spot the difference. Maintaining Wage and Hour Compliance in 2013 (via AccountingWeb) With wage and hour lawsuits becoming more prevalent in recent years, it’s important to fully understand the wage and hour allegations set in place by law so companies do not get caught into trouble with employees.
