Workforce Industry News for the week of November 18, 2013 This week in the workforce industry… Procurement Technology in the Public Sector: The First Five Trends to Watch for in 2014 (via Spend Matters) Spend Matters sees a number of trends converging in 2014, which they believe will make it an extremely important year for procurement and accounts payable technologies in the public sector on a national basis (including federal, state, local and higher education) – maybe even THE most important year in history. But, Spend Matters poses the question: “What areas are the most interesting (and important) that public sector procurement professionals should pay closest attention to?” Temporary Employment Linked to Childbirth Later in Life (via Medical News Today) “Today’s women are having their first child later in life. According to the CDC, women in the US bear their first child at an average age of 25.6. But a new study suggests a woman’s employment status may influence the age of first childbirth, with prolonged temporary employment causing a woman to be childless up to the age of 35.” Are CEOs Prepared for the Future of Work? (via CEOWorld Magazine) “Today, nearly 18 million independent workers spanning gender and generations, generate nearly $1.2 trillion in total income as independent workers.  But numerous data points support my prediction that in the next decade we will see a 50/50 workforce in which 50% of private workers will have worked as an independent, managing a portfolio of projects rather than a single job. Independence is driving a structural shift in how we approach and define work and requires new skill sets from managers, leaders — and from the C-Suite. That’s it for this week.
