US Ranks Fourth in Global Talent Competitiveness Index

Hello readers! We hope you had an excellent week. It looks like the U.S. had a good week, too, ranking fourth in the second edition of the Global Talent Competitiveness Index.

However, that’s not the only workforce news making headlines this week. We’ve got two additional articles that may spark your interest… US Ranks Fourth in Talent Index (via Staffing Industry Analysts) INSEAD published the second edition of the Global Talent Competitiveness Index, which comprises research co-conducted with the Human Capital Leadership Institute of Singapore and Adecco Group, this week. The findings show that the United States ranked fourth in producing, retaining, and attracting talent, which is a five-spot jump from last year’s index ranking. Switzerland was at the top of this list. In fact, European countries dominated the list, with only six non-European countries making the top 20. These countries include Singapore (2), the U.S. (4), Canada (5), Australia (9), New Zealand (16), and Japan (20). New Jersey Supreme Court Clarifies Independent Contractor Standard under State Wage Laws (via The National Law Review) In Hargrove v. Sleepy’s, LLC, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that the so-called “ABC test” applies when determining whether a worker is an employee or independent contractor under the New Jersey Wage Payment Law (WPL) and the Wage & Hour Law (WHL). The “ABC test” presumes that the individual in question is an employee unless the employer can establish that the individual has free form control or discretion over his or her performance, the service is outside the usual course of business, and the individual is customarily engaged in independently established trade, occupation, or profession. The New Jersey Department of Labor urges businesses who utilize independent contractors to review the relationships with said contractors to make sure they can pass the “ABC test”. Deloitte’s CPO Study: Changing Chief Procurement Officer Behavior (via Spend Matters) Deloitte’s 2014 CPO survey validated a number of trends that the procurement market has its eye on. Jason Busch sat down with Deloitte’s principal and U.S. sourcing and procurement leader, Brian Umbenhauer, and principal, Ryan Flynn, to share their own feedback based on the study’s results. They stress that CPOs should become more engaged in growth and innovation to find different ways for procurement to continue to create value. It’s important that in the war on talent, CPOs work toward winning hearts and minds by engaging stakeholders instead of focusing on price concessions from suppliers.
