Why the smartest AI hiring strategy needs a human in the loop

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how enterprises hire and manage their full-time and extended workforce – boosting speed, scale, and efficiency. Take Amazon’s 2018 experiment with an AI recruiting engine. It was scrapped after engineers discovered systemic bias against female candidates. Or the 2023 class-action lawsuit alleging age discrimination by AI-powered hiring tools—now representing hundreds of millions of potential claimants. 

Most recently, a 2024 University of Washington study tested several open-source AI resumé screeners, and the results were shocking. Resumés with White-associated names were chosen 85% of the time. In comparison, those with Black-associated names were picked only 9% of the time. White female names were selected almost twice as often as Black female names. And resumés with Black male names? Not one was chosen. 

 

Our philosophy: AI should amplify human judgment, not replace it 

AI bias often arises from issues related to training data, model design, deployment feedback loops, and institutional factors. These biases can lead to unfair or inaccurate outcomes, especially for underrepresented groups.
